Orthokeratology Q & A

What is ortho-k?

Ortho-k is a method of corneal reshaping. Ortho-k lenses are prescribed to correct primarily nearsightedness (myopia), but also astigmatism.

While you are asleep, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye (cornea) so you can see clearly the following day when you remove the lenses after you wake up. This allows you to go without glasses or contacts in most cases. To get consistent ortho-k results, you need to wear the lenses most nights.

What are the different options in ortho-k lenses?

There are two brands of FDA-approved ortho-k lenses, Corneal Refractive Therapy from Paragon Vision Sciences and Vision Shaping Treatment from Bausch + Lomb. Both are customizable gas permeable lenses that you wear only while sleeping to gently reshape your cornea.

Am I a good candidate for ortho-k?

If you are tired of wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses, you may be a good candidate for ortho-k. Ortho-k candidates can be nearly any age, from young children to older adults. In fact, many children benefit from ortho-k because it may prevent their myopia from worsening.

If you want vision correction, ortho-k can be a great nonsurgical solution.  You can stop ortho-k at any time you like, and your corneas will gradually revert to their original shape.

Your doctor at Simply Eyes can perform a comprehensive eye exam and discuss your concerns to help you decide whether ortho-k is right for you.

How long does it take to get better vision with ortho-k?

If you wear the ortho-k lenses every night, you can typically expect better vision within a week. Many patients notice that their vision is dramatically better in a few days.

Can I still have LASIK after ortho-k?

Yes. If you want to get LASIK after ortho-k, you can do so with no problems as long as you are a good LASIK candidate. But, you have to discontinue ortho-k for the time period that your Simply Eyes doctor recommends before your LASIK surgery so your corneas can revert to their original shape.
